making a successful torrent

here is how bittorrent economics works and how you can avoid making torrents that record false completes and never seed to a healthy swarm

do not make large collections the contents of which are non dependent or you have the situation where leechers pick and choose what files to download. if a leecher downloads only a single file then the bittorrent protocol records a complete ... and worse, that complete shows as a seed in the swarm but it cannot help the swarm because it only has 1 file complete

this problem is also seen with discographies and collections of books and my advice is always the same

the economics of bittorrent do not favour large torrents and they do not favour collections. the combination makes for a difficult time seeding the torrent to a healthy swarm, a virtual impossibility when compared to the healthy swarm of a game or a movie torrent with 2 or 3 dependent files. say it takes 4 days to download 1.2GB on adsl it then takes 2 weeks to seed to a 1:1 ratio ... forget it, the downloader is BORED by the system

the fix is 1. RAR your collections, and 2. keep collections to a realistic size (400MB max)

do make torrents that a leecher can and is able to seed to a 1:1 ratio
do not make torrents that leechers can pick and choose their file downloads
